Our History

DS&D has been committed to helping people work more efficiently since our early beginnings as a New York City office furniture manufacturer. Like most success stories, ours began with one man's brave entrepreneurial spirit and incredible craftsmanship.

Today, our design-driven and innovative interior solutions are increasing workplace productivity through flexibility and comfort. Although we're no longer a manufacturer, our integrated approach allows us to be a single-source provider of furniture, architectural and technology products spanning the full range of office, education and laboratory applications.

As one of the nation's oldest companies, we take incredible pride in continuing the traditions and business principals entrusted in us for nearly two centuries. Today and as we have since 1829, DS&D stays sharply focused on our goal of fostering lifetime partnerships that our clients can depend on for our time honored expertise and world class customer service.

After 180 years, the products we offer have inevitably changed. Our commitment to excellence hasn't.



In the early 1900's the T.G. Sellew Co. relocated from its original location at 111 Fulton Street to 318 Broadway in the heart of New York City's Lower East Side. This early 19th century T.G. Sellew roll-top desk is now a rare and valuable antique collector's item. A classic Dancker & Sellew delivery van is photographed during New York City's historic rainfall during the Summer of 1953. This photograph is derived from a July 23 article in the 'New York World Telegram'. Commemorating its 125th anniversary in 1954, Dancker & Sellew placed this advertisement in the Wall Street Journal.

Milestones

1829Timothy Gibson (T.G.) Sellew establishes T.G. Sellew Co. in New York City and quickly becomes the leading manufacturer of wooden roll-top office desks in the metropolitan area.

1937Under the direction of Paul Dancker Sr., the firm of Danes, Dancker, Lane begins selling Steelcase office furniture in New York City as one of its very first distributors in the country.

1941Paul Dancker Sr. joins T.G. Sellew Co. to form Dancker & Sellew.

1948Paul Dancker Jr. becomes involved in his father's furniture business and begins his career acquiring new corporate accounts.

1962Under the creative direction of Paul Dancker Jr., Dancker & Sellew revolutionize the office furniture industry by opening a large furniture showroom in New York City featuring actual office vignettes - an industry first.

1966Bill Douglas partners with the successful Dancker & Sellew to establish Dancker, Sellew & Douglas (DS&D).

1974DS&D acquires Office Interiors in Plainfield,NJ and begins expanding its territory into the New Jersey marketplace.

1995As the office furniture industry grows exponentially in the New York./New Jersey marketplace, DS&D reports record sales of over $250 million.

2003In an effort to better serve its wide range of pharmaceutical clients, DS&D diversifies its product offering by acquiring Windsor Laboratory Products, a prominent Fisher Hamilton dealer.

2005DS&D acquires Summit Lighting, a New York City based commercial lighting distributor.

2009DS&D acquires General Office Environments (GOE), a leading provider of commercial furnishings in New Jersey. The consolidation of two of the Northeast region’s largest and most-recognized commercial interior companies marks an important milestone in the DS&D timeline.

Today, DS&D employs nearly 200 employees and operates 3 offices in New York and New Jersey, including a state-of-the-art Asset Management Center at our Somerville headquarters.

   
How far we've come

In May of 2003, DS&D opened the doors of its new headquarters in Somerville,NJ. This state-of-the-art facility acts as a living showroom, illustrating many of the innovative work environments we aspire to create for our clients every single day.
